Alternate Color Designs for echoing escher

To experiment with colors for this blanket, see the the Supplemental Content (access code at end of book) to download a coloring page to experiment with your own color ideas.

This pattern will lend itself to a lot of different colorations that can change the focus of blanket. Typically the points defining a square are colored the same to give the square in a square illusion.

The example shown below uses a repeating sequence of 8 colors worked in blues and gold. To generate this design the colors were arranged from darkest to lightest, keeping the blues and yellows together. The first block, at top-left has the 3 darkest blue colors, the next block retires the darkest color and introduces the next lightest color in the center square, and promotes the other 2 colors outwards. This process is repeated to generate 8 unique block colorations which are then repeated throughout the blanket.

Another option is to incorporate striping in the triangle shapes.

INSPIRATION

The artwork of Escher is the inspiration for this blanket. Like Escher’s work, this blanket can be seen from multiple viewpoints from which different designs emerge. The four point stars are also a popular motif for scrap quilts like the very colorful one shown below.
