Alternate Color Designs for ric rac blanket
To experiment with colors for this blanket, see the the Supplemental Content (access code at end of book) to download a coloring page to experiment with your own color ideas.
This design is very amenable to being worked from your stash in more or fewer colors. One idea that would give it a different look, is to work each 9-patch in 9 different colors and use use neutral colors for the zig-zags. Search for “9 patch zig zag quilts” and the quilts made from this design will give you additional inspiration for colors.
Ric Rac is worked in subdued, heathered yarns from Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Superwash. The blanket is worked modularly (no sewing) but there are many ends to weave in due to the color changes, but in my opinion it is well worth the effort. See the Extra content video on how to invisably weave in ends. The checked squares are worked in Intarsia.
Inspiration
I love checks and creating “scrappy,” multi-colored designs for blankets. This design is inspired by Amish 9-patch quilts like the one picture below.
