In one evening, knit up this head-hugging cabled headband with a classic braid and ribbed edge.

Yarn

Paton’s Alpaca Blend, chunky (60% Acrylic / 22% Wool / 10% Nylon / 8% Alpaca, 155 yds/142 m; 3.5oz/100g); 1 skein Birch (light taupe)

Needles

US Size 8 (5mm) straight needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Notes

Headband is worked flat, then ends are sewn together. A chart is provided for those preferring to work from a chart. For best fit, work first and last 3 sts of each row more tightly.

Abbreviations

3/3 LC      slip next 3 sts to cn and hold to back, knit next 3 sts, then knit 3 sts from cn.
3/3 RC      slip next 3 sts to cn and hold to front, knit next 3 sts, then knit 3 sts from cn.

Instructions

CO 19 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K3, p2, k9, p2, k3.
Row 2 (WS): P3, k2, p9, k2, p3.
Row 3: P5, 3/3 LC, k3, p5.
Row 4: K5, p9, k5.
Row 5: Rep row 1.
Row 6: Rep row 2.
Row 7: P5, k9, p5.
Row 8: Rep row 4.
Row 9: K3, p2, k3, 3/3 RC, p2, k3.
Row 10: Rep row 2.
Row 11: Rep row 7.
Row 12: Rep row 4.

 Rep [Rows 1 – 12] 8 (8, 9) times or until headband measures approximately 18 (20, 22) inches/45 (50, 55) cm.
Woman (20”) size only: Work [Rows 1 – 6] once.
BO loosely. Cut yarn, leaving a 20”/50cm tail.

Finishing

Using mattress st and BO tail, sew CO and BO ends together. Weave in ends. Block to measurements. If the headband is too loose, place in dryer with a wet towel and dry with heat, checking fit every 5 minutes.
